Most water features, with life
in them or not, require some form of filtration to maintain or improve water
quality. Filter modes run the full gamut of simple particulate strainers
intended to keep solids out of the pump, to computer-monitored systems with
meters and dosers. This is a brief overview describing modes of filtration for
waterscapes.
You will find there is a
plethora of various, sometimes conflicting opinions regarding the best
available, most appropriate mode for a given application. Unfortunately, to my
knowledge, there are no comprehensive reference works that could provide you
with one source of state of the art information. In my opinion you should do
your bst to educate yourself as to the choices that make most sense. This is
best done, surprise (!) by reading such works as the one in your hands… but
there are many more.
Outside of books, there are many
othr sources of information (magazines, the Internet) that promote various
manufacturers' wares, and perspectives. Depending on whether the system at hand
is intended to be sterile or biological; balanced with plant and animal life and
no circulation; have influent water from determinant source(s); be indoors or
out; be crystal clear or tolerably murky; ad seeming nauseum, there are a
spectrum of biological, physical/mechanical, chemical filters to consider.
If it seems the best I can do is
commiserate with you over the state of affairs in our industry at present, be
aware; I intend to do much more. The following Sections will give you a firm
beginning as to the theory and current best practices for maintaining your
system in the way of filter design, construction and maintenance. For biological
systems this will be a concise guide to options per all given sets of
circumstances.
Do not despair at the disparate
and conflicting opinions regarding filtration amongst writers, retailers,
contractors and hobbyists. Remember, a great deal of water gardening is art
as well as science; keep in mind this difference when appraising the anecdotal
information you come across.
